A common debate over genocide begins with the discussion of should it be dealt with on a national or international level? Often people argue that when another countries butts into stop genocide they are butting into another’s sphere of influence, concerning themselves with matters that are none of their business. After reading “ An international Crime from preventgenocide.org , my opinion that genocide should be dealt with on a international level, is only stronger.
One main reason why genocide should be on as international level is simply because I do not believe any act of genocide would stop if it were dealt with nationally. The reason for this is that generally it is the state that is carrying out the act of genocide, like the Nazi party of Germany or the government of Czarist Russia and Rumania for the horrifying pogroms their instigated. A state would never prosecute against itself; it would only support itself, therefore supporting the continuation of genocide.
Another reason why genocide must be considered an international crime is because of the many international treaties, which have specific obligations concerning the treatment of one’s own nationals. An example would be the United States and Spain treaty of 1898 in which free exercise of religions was assured by the United States to the inhabitants of the territories, which were ceded to her. Many other examples are found under the League of Nations, which signed a number of European countries after WWII. Under the different treaties the main requirement is there are no persecutions on any account made against any religious or racial group. The Charter of the United Nations Organization also provides for the international protection of human rights, indicating that the denial of such rights by any state is a matter of concern to all mankind. If any country was to go against the obligations of the different treaties, and embark on the mal treatment or purge of population based on racial or religious fact, they would be going against the treaties. By not abiding to the requirements of the treaties, tolerance of the different countries would grow thin; eventually bringing about war. War does not solve the problem it only brings amount more rivalry and killing.
Rivalry and killing only increases the animosity that is created when countries go against their treaties. Trust between countries is broken and the largest damage economically can be seen in the trade market. International trade depends upon the confidence of the participants to fulfill their obligations. If there is doubt it averts trade between the countries involved, which results in a decline of international income, and an increase of unneeded goods within a country. As one can see it is a lose, lose situations.
One final reason to consider genocide an international concern is because all the different heritage in our world has been created with the contributions of all nations. Thing about if Jews who were controlled by Germany were not able to created the bible or birth Jesus, or the poles had not had the opportunity to give to the world a Chopin. Maybe the world would not have had the privilege to seen the creation of the Wright brothers, or mother Teresa’s work, I mean look how much we would be missing? It is not worth it, which is why as world with many nations, we must internationally stand up for peace, or prosperity, and for our heritage.
