During a social class a couple of us were given the task to look into the truth behind the reasoning for the UN not taking more action. After going through an immense amount of information we concluded that it is due to China success over Sudan’s Oil.
China has been able to benefit in the past couple years over Sudan unstable economy. Many other countries are afraid to put any money into Sudan’s oil because of how unstable the country is, therefore China who has invested in Sudan’s oil has been able to create a monopoly of the oil industry there. As of now China receives over 7 percent of its income in its economy directly from Sudan’s oil. Also as of right now China is experiencing a rapid industrialization, so they need the oil they are receiving from Sudan. Now here is what poses the problem, if the UN was to go in on terms of genocide, many drastic measure would be taken like no trading with Sudan, and as a result it can be assured that China would loss its market in Sudan. Losing the market in Sudan would mean China would loss over 7 percent of the annually income. To put that into perspective, image a 100 billion dollar economy, losing 7 percent, that would be 7 billion dollars, which is not a easy thing to recover from losing. Basically China’s entire market would crash if their Sudan oil income was to cease. In order to ensure that China’s economy does not crash, at the UN meeting, China would most likely veto any invasion in Sudan. China is able to veto any plan of action seeing as they are part of the Security Council. Therefore because China vetoes the UN going into Sudan, the UN is incapable of classifying the Sudan crisis as an act of genocide, because that would require, with out questioning, the UN to take action.
As one can see it is a sick world that one’s economy comes before hundreds of thousands of lives.
